Smart Doll Slouch Knit Beanie
Smart Doll ·This simple knit hat resembles a loose beanie that Culture Japan used to sell. It looks particularly good on Smart Doll boys. I like use the magic loop method, but double pointed needles, or knitting it flat and sewing up at the end also works great. If you would like a more interesting hat, you can add stripes or other patterns. Pairs well with the Boy’s Mittens or Girl’s Mittens patterns.
Knitting Pattern
Needles: 2.75mm stainless steel circular needles
Gage: 36 stitches, 46 rows -> 10 x 10 cm
Yarn: Super Fine (1) (Woolike)
Abbreviations & Info:
- k1 - Knit one stitch or however many the number says.
- p1 - Purl one stitch or however many the number says
- LLD - Left leaning decrease, knitting two stitches together with the first stitch ending up on top. I knit “combination”, so for me this is the easiest decrease of just knitting two stitches together.
- RLD - Right leaning decrease, knitting two stitches together with the second stitch ending up on top. (Used in RLD Variation below)
- selvage - An extra stitch at the edge of knit fabric. It creates a nice finish and leaves room for seaming. To create a selvage, I slip the first stich and purl the last stitch of each row.
Cast on 88 stitches if you are knitting in the round. (Add 2 stitches for selvage if you are knitting flat.)
RND 1-12: k2 p2 ribbing. (Or knit till you have about 2 cm of ribbing.)
RND 13-40: Knit rounds in stockinette. (Or till you have about 8.5cm.)
RND 41: k9 LLD * 8 (80)
RND 42: k80
RND 43-56: Repeat decrease rounds and knit rounds. Each decrease round, knit one less stitch before doing the decrease. (16 rounds total, including the first 2)
RND 57: k1 LLD * 8 (16)
RND 58: LLD * 8 (8)
Cut the yarn, thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull to close. Use the yarn tail to gather the back of the hat. I ran the stitch down, then back up and tied the yarn. Weave in the yarn tails.
Variations
Larger Looser Beanie
Add 8 more stitches when casting on. I think this bigger size looks better on my boy Soumei. Then start the decreases one row sooner like this:
RND 39: k10 LLD * 8 (88)
RND 40: k88
RND 41: k9 LLD * 8 (80)
…
Right Leaning Decrease
If you would rather do a right leaning decrease:
RND 1-12: k2 p2 ribbing. (12 rows or knit till you have about 2 cm of ribbing.)
RND 13-40: Knit rounds in stockinette. (27 rows or till you have about 8.5cm total.)
RND 41: RLD k9 * 8 (80)
RND 42: k80
RND 43-56: Repeat decrease rounds and knit rounds. Each decrease round, knit one less stitch before doing the decrease. (16 rounds total, including the first 2)
RND 57: RLD k1 * 8 (16)
RND 58: RLD * 8 (8)
